And please, please spread the word

IT'S YOUR TURN:

You never had a say when our old paper, the Seattle P-I, closed its print edition. You never had a say when a decision in a boardroom in New York City meant fewer journalists would be watchdogging your city government.
Do you want to keep reading your favorite P-I writers
?
Now's your chance to be heard.
We are many of the journalists who used to put out the P-I. With the help of KCTS 9, we're putting out this site at first as volunteers.
But we need your support to keep it going.

* If you want more coverage of city issues, or continue seeing the professional work of former P-I photographers like Grant Haller, please consider making a one-time donation of the price of a newspaper subscription, $240, or recurring monthly donations of $20.

* Or half that, $120 or $10/month.

TELL US HOW YOU'D LIKE YOUR DONATION SPENT!

This is the democratization of the media. Do you appreciate our elections and civic affairs coverage? Please support it by making a donation and noting you’re contribution to government coverage. Your tax-deductible donation will go to writers in that subject area. Please consider making a recurring donation on our justgive page.

The same goes for whatever kind of reporting you’d like to support. Make a donation and note whether you’d like it spent on:

  • General site support;
  • Politics/government;
  • Environmental reporting;
  • Film;
  • Theater;
  • Arts;
  • Music;
  • Photography
  • Parenting;
  • Mariners: please note that with the season winding down we’d like to pay our Mariners reporter for his fine work during the season.
  • Food;
  • Maritime;
  • Gardening

We think our partnership with KCTS 9 could be the start of something special. The future of journalism is now in your hands.

Agree with above poster. PayPal would be great, it also allows the payer to cover the cost of the fees.

RE: Donations
Hi, the main difference was that paypal wouldn't let us get monthly donations. Justgive seems to work the same way as paypal.

If you'd like to donate through justgive, thanks very much

Recurring Donations
PayPal absolutely supports monthly subscriptions:

"Subscriptions and Recurring Payments is a low-cost way for you to accept credit card and bank account payments for content site subscriptions, newsletter fees, club dues, or recurring donations, and can be fully integrated with your website in a few easy steps."

Donation
Almost got through the donation process when I saw the 3% fee in the fine-print. I don't have a problem with the amount, but the principle.

In any event, I'm mailing a check because it's easier and cheaper than dealing with justgive.org. You really should take a second look at PayPal - it supports subscriptions and is widely adopted. My PayPal account is linked to a checking account, a debit card and multiple credit cards meaning I wouldn't have to re-enter any payment info in order to send you money. justgive.org serves as one more barrier as it doesn't benefit from the network effect of PayPal's existing base of users.

PayPal button on home page
You really need a PayPal button on your home page (your little "Donate" text link is a marketing joke). Stop being so hung up on the monthly deal, and forcing us to sign onto yet another web paying service. Lots of us have PayPal, and are used to giving spontaneously to web pages that we like, when we feel like it and have some spare change (e.g. put a little button on every page, and say "If you like this article, click here to show your appreciation." You might also learn what people want to read). Go where the money is, and stop trying to make us conform to some other way that suits you and not us. You're only hurting yourselves.

I just read your article on the gun ban policy issue and Joe Mallahan's and Mike McGinn's positions. This was very informative. Until now, I did not know you existed. Good journalism is essential in a free, democratic society, and I absolutely support your writers. I intend to continue to read about local issues in the Seattle PostGlobe.
