A few words on the Israeli lobby and Congress

PostGlobe politics reporter

Here’s how the powerful, pro-Israel lobby AIPAC describes itself:

“For more than half a century, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee has worked to help make Israel more secure by ensuring that American support remains strong.  From a small pro-Israel public affairs boutique in the 1950s, AIPAC has grown into a 100,000-member national grassroots movement described by The New York Times as ‘the most important organization affecting America's relationship with Israel.’”

Here’s how STOP AIPAC , a group formed by peace and justice activists in the San Francisco Bay Area, describes the lobby:

“AIPAC had played a key role in fomenting support for the U.S. invasion of Iraq.  It is playing an even greater role in supporting a future military strike against the people of Iran…  Only rarely is a critical word uttered among politicians regarding AIPAC and its associates that support unjust and aggressive and disastrous  U.S. policies toward the peoples of the Middle East…  For too long, policies that support Israeli militarism and occupation have gone unchallenged.  Political voices raising even minor disagreements with prevailing policies are silenced or subject to campaigns of intimidation.”

Whichever view is right about AIPAC, the group – and Israel – certainly got a boost recently with the vote on House Resolution 867 which called on “the President and the Secretary of State to oppose unequivocally any endorsement or further consideration of the Report of the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict… .”

You may recall from an earlier blog, that the report, by Richard Goldstone , a widely respected former prosecutor at the U.N. war crimes tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, condemned both Israel and the Palestinian authorities for war crimes during Israel’s military invasion of Gaza from December 27 to January 18. But it singled out Israel for “actions amounting to war crimes, possibly crimes against humanity.”

There were 344 representatives who voted for the resolution; only 36 voted against it. Washington state representatives Brian Baird and Jim McDermott were part of the lonely stand against the resolution. All the other Washington state representatives – Jay Inslee , Rick Larsen , Doc Hastings , Cathy McMorris , Norm Dicks , Dave Reichert and Adam Smith – voted in favor.

I’d like to hear sometime our lawmakers’ views on AIPAC.

This "Boutique" smells fishy
AIPAC lies about its history, because in fact it is simply the American Zionist Council, repackaged and rebranded.

Robert Kennedy, as AG, ordered that "boutique" to shut down after it was caught laundering Israeli money into US lobbying and PR.

All that stuff was declassified last year, but the so-called "journalists" who report on Middle East affairs have never seen fit to write about it. No wonder they're all going broke.

Fulbright called it right; AIPAC owns Congress
One quite famous American lawmaker who conducted two hearings in 1963 to determine if AIPAC's predecessor, the American Zionist Council (as noted above), should register as an agent of a foreign government and who became the Israel Lobby's first major target was Sen. J. William Fulbright.

On Page 183 in The Price of Empire, published in 1989, Fulbright wrote:

"The fundamental problem for us is that we have lost our freedom of action in the Middle East and are committed to policies that promote neither our own national interest nor the cause of peace. AIPAC (the American-Israeli Public Affairs Committee) and its allied organizations have effective working control of the electoral process. They can elect or defeat nearly any congressman or senator they wish, with their money and coordinated organization."

In that same year, a member of Congress who was identified as "pro-Israel" told The New Republic's Morton Kondracke (Aug. 7, 1989), also very pro-Israel, "If there were a secret ballot, aid to Israel would be cut severely. It's not out of affection anymore that Israel gets $3 billion a year. It's from fear that you'll wake up one morning and find that an opponent has $500,000 to run against you."

Both those comments were published 20 years ago and AIPAC's power over our elected representatives has since expanded exponentially many times over that period.

Under the circumstances Brian Baird and Jim McDermott should be given citations for bravery.

AIPAC: Against American Interests
For sixty years America has enabled Israel's brutalization of the Palestinians. American money and American protection from the civilized world through UN Security Council vetoes are the root problem. They are directly responsible for Israel's lebensraum, apartheid, ghettoization, pogrom, and chosen people policies. They are also at least indirectly responsible for 911 and our Near East wars. Neocon Republicans tend to be ethnically and politically allied with Israel. They and AIPAC make it all happen.

AIPAC - Working against American interests
AIPAC has long put the interests of Israel above those of the United States. The question must be asked why AIPAC has not been required to register of agents of a foreign power - which they most certainly are.

Registering as a foreign power should show where the interests of this group lie but also ensure that donations to AIPAC would no longer be tax deductible. It might also ensure that our elected representatives no longer act as slaves to AIPAC.

AIPAC = Fifth Column
For over five decades AIPAC has consistently supported Israel's interests over those of the United States. Simply put AIPAC and those American citizens who support it and the state of Israel over the interests of the United States are nothing short of Fifth Columnists and need to dealt with as such.

AIPAC Running Congress
344 to 36! What an absolute unabashed crime against the American voter! It would be absolutely impossible to go out to any state in the US and find 380 random voters who will come out 344 to 36 in their support for these truly criminal actions of "Congress"! We elect them and then they sell out to a foreign government who willfully tries to sink our ships and kill our sailors, who schemes to have us sacrifice thousands of our bravest young men and women to destroy any nation who "might" pose a "possible" threat to them, and who is guilty of the same genocide and ethnic cleansing that was once so cruelly practiced against them! The US has no true supporters left in this world because of our spineless congress, except for the morally empty and corrupt Zionist government and its extension in Washington. And they do not even support us... they control and mock and scheme against us for their own benefit. How are we voters ever to take back control of our own government?!?

Stop AIPAC
AIPAC is a neocon criminal organization that has made the US complicit in virtually every single one of the long list of crimed committed by Israel against the Palestinian people over the last half century plus.

Yawn is Right
America's gone to war for Kuwaitis, South Koreans, South Vietnamese, Kosovars...we even toppled Noreiga for the Panamanians. Meanwhile, Israel's been in three wars for its existance and we've never even lent them a single Batallion. Some Lobby Aipac is. They don't even stack up to the Panamanian Lobby in exile.
